Legion Mary
The Legion of Mary originated in Dublin, Ireland on September 7, 1921 led by
its founder Frank Duff. It is an association of Catholics with the
sanction of the church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, Mediatrix of all Graces.
The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its
members developed by prayer and active cooperation, under ecclesiastical
guidance, in Mary's and the Church's work in advancing the reign of
Christ.
The Legion of Mary is open to all practicing Catholics who are prepared to fulfill
their duties as Active Members. The basic duties of members are:
- Regular and punctual attendance of weekly meetings, currently every
Wednesday at 7:30 PM, room 2B, Pavalkis Hall.
- Performance of a weekly work obligation assigned by the President.
- Daily Recitation of the Catena Legionis (Chain of the Legion).
The Legion of Mary also has what it calls Auxiliary Members, or praying members. Their
duty is to pray the Catena Legionis and the Holy Rosary everyday in
union with the Active Members.
The Legion of Mary has a Junior Legion of Mary for the youth, or those below 18 years
of age. They meet once a week, and their legion work is mostly done at
home, among relatives and friends, through prayers and service.
The whole membership, its activities and functions, are under the direction and
guidance of the Parish Priest. The Spiritual Director for the Legion
comes from the clergy.
